The path was dark and barren. Potholes covered the ground and her knees revealed the bleeding wounds, each fall had brought. This had been a long, tiring journey and her entire being ached with longing for rest and refreshing. Now suddenly her journey had come to a halt as an unusual structure blocked the path. In front of her stood this enormous doorway, framing two beaten looking wooden doors.

"Where did this come from?" Jesse wondered. "Is it a trap?"

Her experiences down this path told her to be very cautious of this strange structure, yet something about this doorway held her attention. She couldn't quite describe it. It was as if just looking at the scene in front of her, brought her hope. "Could it be that the answers to all my questions can be found behind these doors?" she cautiously hoped.

Looking behind her, Jesse saw the dark and lonely road she had walked. The thought of what she had faced to get here, made her cringe. "I'm not going back that way," she resolved. "I can't face that again. I'm going to take a risk. I am going to walk through this door!"

With a firm resolve and a little nervousness, she slowly stepped through the doorway...

"Whoosh!" Is was as though she had just been transported to a different world.

She felt almost blinded as many shades of green sprung to life in front of her. The trees shed their blankets of covering to give cool shade on the ground below them and each blade of grass seemed to dance before her as they swayed in the gentle breeze. The sudden roar of rushing water in her ears brought a strange feeling of excitement. Seeing the magnificence of this powerful waterfall gave her a sense of great awe, yet it seemed to be shouting for her to come and dance without abandon, in it's refreshing spray of fine mist.

She could hardly believe the scene her eyes were beholding.

"What is this place?!" she wondered in disbelief. "It is like stepping into the warm sun after being huddled in a dark cold room."

Looking closer now, Jesse soon realized the answer to her question. Beautifully displayed in the mist from the waterfall, a rainbow proudly stood out, showing of it's many colors like a peacock fanning it's feathers. She felt that feeling of hope again as if somewhere hidden in this rainbow was the answer. As if it was a sign from heaven.

Then suddenly the full understanding flashed through her mind, like lightning in a dark sky. She knew the answer.

With wonder in her voice, she slowly whispered, "I have found, the doorway to LIFE!"

You say, “Well what is the big deal about the study of salvation? I always thought that salvation was pretty simple wasn’t it? How much could you teach on salvation?”

Actually, quite a few studies! You will be surprised how much we are going to cover on this. In fact soteriology is at the heart of everything that we stand for and believe in. It is at the heart of our whole spiritual lives and it is what we are here for. It is what serving the Lord is all about. That is why soteriology is such an important subject.

Saved From What?

Before I get into it, let’s just stop and get your minds turning a little bit. What does the word saved mean to you? If I come to you and say, “Are you saved?” What are you going to say? I hope you are going to say yes, otherwise there is a problem. So, are you saved? What does that mean?

Again, if I were to ask you, “What do you mean when you say, you are saved?” I will likely hear things like, “Well I believe if I died tonight I will go to heaven.”

That is probably what about more than ninety percent of Christians will say.

You say, “I’m saved from hell. Saved is to go and live eternally with the Lord in His presence in heaven one day.”

That is what most Christians believe. And so to them salvation means being born again, getting saved, turning from the path of sin that has taken them to hell, and now turning to salvation. If that is all your salvation consists of then I feel sorry for you, because salvation involves a whole lot more than going to heaven one day. That is why we need to study the subject of soteriology and salvation.

Back to the Beginning

Before we can learn what it is that we are saved from, and what it is that we are saved to, we need to go back to the beginning again. We need to go right back to the beginning of the Bible and see exactly what it is that God intended for us in the first place, and what it is that He intends for us in the end. What I would like to specifically cover here is the condition that every human being is in before they come to Christ and enter into what we call the experience of salvation.

This was a very wide point of view about salvation in Christian life. It really change my approch to traditional salvation doctrines and changed my personal walk with the Lord.
